The history of surfing in the Maldives dates back to 1973 when a young surfer named Tony Hinde from Sydney and his friend Mark hitched a ride on a private yacht sailing from Sri Lanka to South Africa. Unfortunately, the yacht ran aground on a reef in the Maldives. They spent several months repairing the boat and exploring the atolls. In early 1974, Tony discovered a group of surf spots near Himmafushi village island, including Pasta Point, Sultans, Honky's, and Jailbreak (all unnamed at the time).
